HEAVY DUTY SMALL TACTICAL BACKPACK

Mk II Changes:

  • Company logo changed to new Direct Action logo after rebranding
  • Redesigned side pockets. Zipper to expand side pockets was removed and they are now equipped with elastic for expansion

It’s a lightweight and versatile backpack designed for Military and Law Enforcement operators. This smaller pack has a wide camo and solid color selection that also makes it a great choice for hunters and outdoor enthusiasts. You can also get it in snow camo - PenCott SnowDrift™ for winter activities. The camo/color selections with the low profile look and feel makes it a perfect Everyday Carry (EDC) bag. If you’re looking for a small, heavy duty MOLLE backpack for your laptop, tablet, iPad, hydration bladder, etc. or just a solid base for your bug out bag (BoB) – Dust® made by Direct Action® is the best value for your money.

The Dust® is a 20+liter backpack oriented towards use as EDC and is essentially a one day backpack. It features two zippered compartments. The main compartment features an internal padded sleeve that can be used for a hydration bladder or it can be used to safely carry up to a 13” laptop. There is also a center tube exit for a hydration tube. This compartment also has a zippered mesh pocket for accessories. The smaller front compartment has an internal organizer for notepads, GPS, writing utensils and other essentials, plus a clear vinyl pocket for maps and documents. Externally there are 3 flat pockets- one on each side and one on the front of the pack. These additional side flat pockets can carry small and flat items. After unzipping the side pockets, they will fit a standard U.S. canteen or nalgene water bottle. The zippered side accessible flat pocket on the front surface is a good place to keep smaller items that need to be easily accessible without opening the packs compartments. The carrying straps and waistbelt of the Dust® are adjustable and can be stowed away in the back panel, turning this pack into a slim, no-snag hand luggage. Laser-cut system compatible with MOLLE/PALS makes the backpack not only fully modular, but also still maintains a low profile look. Laser-cut does not absorb water like traditional MOLLE/PALS webbing. Suspension system is based on comfortable shoulder straps and internal stiffener in the back. Made of durable 500D Cordura® nylon fabric with water resistant coating.
Combat Vent System®, the innovative ventilation system used in backpacks, and provides increased comfort for their users. Made of contoured foam profiles with multiple air channels that are combined with airy mesh, CVS® keeps the pack off the back, which enhances air circulation preventing heat build-up and sweating, while the stiff foam ensures comfort and stability.

If you are interested in a larger backpack we have 2 available. The Ghost® which is our largest backpack and the Dragon Egg® which is our medium size backpack.

Features:

  • 100% 500D Cordura fabric for durability
  • Unique Patented CVS-Combat Vent System® for operator comfort during prolonged use
  • Lightweight, durable, non moisture absorbing laser-cut MOLLE/PALS system
  • Heavy duty, glove friendly YKK® zippers
  • Main compartment has a padded sleeve for hydration bladder or up to a 13” laptop (max size 9.5"x13.5")
  • Main compartment also has a mesh pocket
  • One external zippered flat pocket on front
  • Two small side pockets that expand when unzipped
  • Additional back compartment for hydration bladder
  • Paracord drag handle (contains (2) 2.5m cords)
  • Quick release shoulder straps
  • D-Ring attachment points
  • Side retention straps with buckles
  • Detachable hip belt
  • Velcro panel (10.1 x 5.1 cm / 4 x 2 in) for ID patches
  • All clips and buckles are made by Duraflex®/WooJin
  • PenCott™ and Multicam® camouflages are NIR treated

*Please note that you are purchasing only the bag. Contents shown in the pictures are for illustration purposes only and are not included with your purchase.

Personal Carry-on then Day Hike Review by Thomas D / (Posted on 3/2/2023)
Bag is perfect size for international personal carry-on. I needed bag to also function for day hikes. Really like hide away straps great for boarding plane and under-seat storage. Zippers work great. Bottle holders keep bottles secure. Buckles work well. All around a great bag. Functional. High quality construction. As a back pack it is comfortable. Straps adjustable. Highly recommend.

Great bag, needs a few tweaks Review by Mike S / (Posted on 9/24/2022)
High quality bag, built like a tank. However, the shoulder straps tend to “self adjust” rather easily. Slightly smaller than I thought but I think that is on me.

High quality. I'm coming from the Dragon Egg which I loved. The Dust is obviously smaller which takes some getting used to. It's made me downsize what I carry which is what I wanted. I highly reccomend.

I would buy DUST mk II again Review by Marc G / (Posted on 10/9/2021)
A bit pricey but a solid and well designed backpack with a lot of useful features. I also have a smaller Osprey backpack that I use for day hikes and it’s very good but the DUST is more suitable as a “get home bag” or multi day use than the Osprey. The DUST is definitely a tougher backpack.

AWESOME PACK !! Review by Greg W / (Posted on 7/15/2020)
So far so good, built tough, high grade materials.
The DUST is great for the everyday use pack, (I work construction) so this gets a work out.
A change that would be good, is where 2 zippers meet there was a clasps carabineer or something to hold the 2 zippers from un-zipping , not a big deal, would be nice

Perfect size Review by Ben P / (Posted on 2/23/2020)
Great size for my needs, day pack and overnight camping. The material is soft but feels strong. 1 pocket holds my Toaks cook set and the other my water bottle. I'm amazed with amount of gear I can stuff in this little Dust II. At first I thought the new pocket design would be a problem but as it turns out that fear was a nonstarter. All the zippers work extremely well. The jury is still out on the large see through pocket in the admin pouch but so far it works well enough. I still need to figure out the size water bladder that will fit and I definitely wish it had straps on the bottom, i'll figure out some sort of solution to that problem. All in all i'm happy with my with my choice of the Dust II. A shout out to Survival Lilly for turning me on to this day pack.

Excellent work backpack Review by Robert S / (Posted on 11/23/2019)
I use this as my EDC backpack (work as an electrical engineer). It has plenty of room to fit smaller laptops, laptop accessories, and some modestly-sized items in the rear compartment. I love that the front compartment unzips and opens up fully without having to unsnap the compression cinches. The laser-cut webbing is functional yet subtle enough that it doesn't immediately scream "this is a MOLLE webbing!" at first glance. I would have appreciated a few more tie-in points to lash things (like the dragon egg does), but overall this is an excellent backpack

Versatile and Durable Review by Edward C / (Posted on 9/3/2019)
I bought this pack to use as a commuter backpack and also to use for some lightly-weighted rucks, runs, hikes, etc. It accomplishes all these tasks easily, and can be stuffed with gear.
My only constructive comment is that although it is advertised as being capable of carrying a 15" laptop, some 15"-ers may not fit as well as others: the 2015 MacBook Pro 15" barely fits, while the 2018 Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon ~15" fits much more easily. Otherwise this is a great pack.

Best and most comfortable backpack. This really beats that three number brand, I always thought that the hardback on most backpacks we're good. Nope. This one does not have one and it contours to your back feeling comfortable. The padding is great and the features are even better. Rugged material and doesn't scream "I'm tactical". Don't know why I waited so long. Zipper are smooth. Im waiting to buy another.

Awesome day pack for the bush craftsman who likes to pack a pistol Review by Robert E / (Posted on 3/14/2019)
Have to say there's no Dust in the wind when it comes to this pack! All jokes aside, this is one versatile little pack with some great features for those looking to spend a day in the woods with their essential gear. To start, the new side pockets are very well made and secured my para-bottle and Gransfors Bruks Forest axe with no issues when trekking through the woods. The main compartment had enough room to hold my mess kit (Vargo cup, Soto stove, tea, bag of Lipton soup and a Platypus filter) with a little room to spare. The secondary storage compartment also has a decent amount of pockets which BTW, fit my Keith Ti Flask like it was made just for it

Excellent product Review by Alejandro R / (Posted on 8/8/2018)
Awesome bag, period. The 500d Cordura is perfect since most of us don’t need a stiff bulletproof backpack. Only 2 things i would change with the bag? Ditch the para cord grabhandle for a normal one. It’s way too “tactical” looking and it’s not even para cord it’s some cheap alternative. Second? Add a left side zipper on the front pocket so you have access from both sides. Otherwise it’s an outstanding pack.

Well worth double what you pay Review by Bubbles / (Posted on 6/21/2018)
I’ve had my Direct Action Dust backpack for a few years now, first bought right as I left for my first deployment, and a contract after that. The quality is absolutely phenomenal, at a price point one could expect to pay for what you get. From the Middle East, to hunting in Alaska, as well as being my EDC bag- what you get is very hard to beat. I would 100% buy again, no questions asked.

It’s almost funny, because I work with Badlands Packs in part, yet although they make a phenomenal product, I would rather pay full price for DA bags versus my discounted packs from them. Their quality speaks volumes, and I can’t imagine ever having to speak to customer service because I’ve never had an issue

DUST Mk 1 Review Review by Joseph B / (Posted on 4/23/2018)
I bought this daypack for a trip I had in Colorado. I needed a bag that would hold all the gear the rest of my family would not want to carry ie: jackets, water, binos, snacks, and interesting rocks and sticks picked up along the way. I could have taken any backpack; but, I wanted a pack with the external storage capabilities that the molle system, side straps, and side pockets provided.

After 8 years in the Marine Corps infantry I have become bourgeoisie about my daypacks. I recommend this pack to anyone, this pack had everything I would want in a daypack. This was an amazing value for the price. Originally, I was going to buy the 25 litre size; but, the 20 litre Mk 1 was marked down to $70. I was initially concerned, "Will the pack be big enough?", but there was no issue with size. I will probably still buy the 25 liter size in the future, when I can justify the purchase to myself, and pass this one down to my sons.

Pros:

Molle system on front and side. This makes it easy to quickly attach and detach gear without getting into the main pack; attaching a carabiner to the outside is a good way to store a hat. You can also run some bungee cord through the molle and

Side Straps. jackets take up a lot of pack space and you would always rather have a jacket and not need one than vice; I have always rolled my jackets and cinched them down on the side. As a bonus each strap has Velcro to roll up the excess strap for a clean look.

Side Pocket. Held a Nalgene Bottle without issue. This was a big requirement for me and hard to find a good bag that came with this option.

Dedicated Camelback area. This area had a a clipped strap to hold the camelback upright, extra padding, and this is a good spot that you could alternatively fit a laptop/tablet.

Comfortable. The piece that rest against your back is padded and aerated to reduce as much sweating as possible. Shoulder traps were comfortable and came with a center strap to keep the bag centered high on your back.

Quality. I could not ask for better materials; all material, straps, zippers are of highest quality.

Cons:

I could not think of any. This bag had everything I would want in a daypack at the highest quality.

Dust Review by Jeffery V / (Posted on 1/4/2018)
I have packs from 5.11, 3 Camelbaks and a few other hunting packs to compare the Direct Action against. I favor the Direct Action packs over 5.11's and think they are real close to comparing favorably to similar size Camelbaks.

I recently purchased both a Dust and Dragon Egg. These are real nice packs in practical sizing with good features. Put the vertical daisy chained loops featured on the Dragon Egg on the Dust (for lashing taller shooting/walking sticks, etc.). Add a cover with drawstring to secure a 1 qt. wide mouth Nalgene bottle to at least one of the side pockets. The current configuration on both packs allows your bottle to walk up and out of the side pockets, unless you add a tether as I did or sew a stuff sack cover on one of the pockets, not a big deal. There are some really tough/strong/impact resistant polymers available these days. However, in my opinion, the D-rings the poly cord carry handle are woven to, should be metal. The hose ports for hydration are a bit small on my pack. Too small to push the nozzle thru but the quick connect end did without damaging any stitching. Also not a big deal and perhaps even a one off QC issue.

Any pack larger than Dust or Dragon Egg should have an adjustable yolk. The Dragon Egg could benefit from one but is just fine if not ridiculously loaded.

Do these few things, you'll have yourselves a 5 star product in my view. I'd gladly pay a bit more for those enhancements. Great packs, I really like 'em. Can't wait to abuse them in the oilfield and on the trail to see how they hold up.

Perfect Size Pack Review by Claus J / (Posted on 1/2/2018)
This is my second Dust. First was Mk II, second was Mk I. I used to believe a 25L-35L was the sweet spot, but the comfort and organization of this pack changed my mind.

I live in a temperate rain forest with 3x the rainfall of Seattle. Although this is not advertised as waterproof, I use this for everyday carry and the contents have never been wet.

The second pack is my hiking / hunting / fishing pack. It is not too small for a 24-72 hour pack. If grandparents could spend a winter weekend in Finland with the clothes on their back, a knife, a wool blanket, wooden kuksa, and a fire kit, this will do well for a zombie apocalypse, much less what we actually do on a weekend.

The simplicity, quality, and comfort of this pack will find your other packs gathering dust, perhaps why this pack was aptly named.

Ps. Their customer service is great too, the gentlemen who helped me purchase this before the holiday rush was thorough and very polite. Thanks DA!

This is my second DA purchase. I specifically chose this backpack because of the small profile. It’s currently one of the shortest in height on the market. Low profile! Great if your always on the go.
* it’s extremely well tailored. The paracord handle is a great touch. MK2 upgrade for holding water bottle is great, your never hindered by size and never falls out.

Well made piece of gear. Review by Terry W / (Posted on 11/5/2017)
Bought this pack to replace a back I used hunting for the last several years. construction quality is superb. What attracted me was the smooth laser cut molle system. when traversing thru dense vegetation with briars and thorns the pack has yet to get snagged. Will be upgrading my tactical gear as soon as Multicam (required) is available in my size.

Awesome Compact Backpack Review by David M / (Posted on 10/31/2017)
Great materials and construction. Can't find a stray stitch anywhere. Well thought out design, giving you a very compact, form-fitting bag that stays comfortable even when fully expanded at full capacity. Was a bit skeptical about the laser cut Molle slots, but they seem very durable. Side pockets are engineered to lay flat when not used, but comfortably and sturdily accept a 32oz Nalgene bottle nestled in a steel camping cup. A bit pricey, but well spent for this level of quality and usable design/engineering. Kind of kicking myself for not getting the Dragon Egg size though, as this is more a day pack size. Those familiar with volume listings shouldn't have issues selecting the right size, but those not familiar--this is a compact bag. I love it. Will be fun beating it up over the years.

Great EDC pack Review by Leo P / (Posted on 9/8/2017)
The Dust is a great size EDC or get home bag. Ample space, seems durable and the paracord grab handle is a nice touch. I would recommend to anyone but remember the dust is small, 20 liters I believe. Despite the size, it's a nice little pack.

The Perfect 24 Hour Pack Review by Claus J / (Posted on 7/24/2017)
After reading many online reviews I purchased this pack online from DA and am very impressed...although this pack is not waterproof, it is designed to shed water and works well with spray on waterproofing...the molle webbing appears rubberized and sheds water...the document pouch underneath the molle is perfect for a hunting license, fishing license, or passport...the admin pouch opens up to a clear plastic map pocket that is perfectly sized for maps and compass instructions...the rest of the admin pouch is very well organized to hold items both for the office or for an overnight trip...the main compartment is larger than it ollks and holds my iPad in a padded sleeve, a 3 1/2 inch aluminium clipboard with room for an additional large books...there is an additional pocket against the back for holding a water bladder, tarp, or plastic sheet formed to your back if you like a stiffer pack...it is roughly 9x7 below the velcro and 9x10 to the top of the velcro...the straps are wide and padded to distribute weight evenly...this is the perfect size between a camelbak and a 25 litre pack and I highly recommend it

Perfect 24 hour pack Review by Claus J / (Posted on 7/20/2017)
I bought this so I have been provided no compensation for a positive review...I have over a dozen packs and this is by far my favorite...I live in an area with 90+ inch rainfall and this pack, although not waterproof, is designed to shed water effectively. and can be waterproofed by the user...laser cut molle does not absorb water...outside document pouch is perfect for a hunting license, fishing license, or passport...admin pouch has clear map pocket and is designed along form follows function engineering...holds everything I use at work or need on a day hike...main compartment holds my iPad in a padded sleeve and a 3 1/2 thick aluminium clipboard with room to spare...there is an additional pocket between the main compartment and the back of the pack that measures about 9x7 below the Velcro (9x10 to the top of the Velcro) that is useful for a water bladder, tarp, or sheet plastic if you like a more rigid pack...straps have minimal padding but are wide enough to support a 20+ pound load without digging in to your shoulders (and I have bony shoulders)...ventilated back padding makes this much more comfortable than a camelbak (once the ice cubes melt) and can easily be worn all day...in terms of functionality, this pack makes much more sense than having a separate Camelback and 25 litre pack...I have the Gen II pack and there is nothing I would change...if I would have bought this pack first, I would only have 3 packs instead of 13...this one...a 35 litre, and a 60 litre...it's not how much money you spend on a pack that's important, it's how much pack do you get for your money...many people who read on line pack reviews end up buying too big a pack the same way many hunters reading on line reviews end up buying too big of a gun...if Native Americans and Laplanders can survive overnight with what's on their belt, the clothes on their back, and situational awareness, you can too with everything you can fit into this pack...this is an unbelievably efficient pack...well done DA

Best small tactical pack on the market Review by Gregory K / (Posted on 7/12/2017)
If you are looking for a small tactical pack this the best one on the market right now. When you consider the price and the versatility of this pack it makes it even better. If I could only have one backpack to take with me anywhere this would be it. It is compact and light, but sturdy and versatile. You will enjoy this pack because it is very comfortable too and everything is designed with a lot of forethought to usefulness in the real world.

Best pack in its class Review by Greg / (Posted on 6/27/2017)
I was looking for a small tactical pack that I could use as a universal BOB/GHB and also double for hiking and ourdoor trips. When I first started out in prepping and backpacking I got huge backpacks and packed everything in them. I soon realized 70% of the stuff I packed was not ever used. I began searching for smaller tactical packs of 20 liter sized or smaller which I know would keep me light and agile which is important in a bug out bag or get home bag. The last thing you want is to be lugging around a 40 or 50 pound pack while trying to get away from danger. In a true emergency scenario you may need the ability to sprint , climb, jog, and be able to cover a lot of distance in a short amount of time through difficult terrain. While 50 pounds is not very heavy, it will slow you down if you have to cover 30 or miles. Even for backpacking or hiking I often times see people over packing with tons of gadgets and crap they will never use, stick to the basics and keep it simple. The problem I ran into was that all smaller sized tactical packs 20 liters or less were not very well designed because I guess demand for smaller sized tactical packs is lower than 25-40 liters packs which are the rage now. These small packs such as the ones made by mil spec monkey, maxpedition, or mayflower were in the same price range as the DA Dust, but have very poor organization and comfort. I could not believe how little selection there was for small tactical packs, but then I remember about direct action and actually saw an ad on Amazon while I was browsing some other packs. I looked at some youtube videos and checked out the Direct Action website, and I saw the great reviews so I pulled the trigger on the Dust. To my surprise Direct Action is a Polish company which is even better because of my Polish heritage it was nice to know I was supporting a Polish company, which is by the way one of America's most loyal allies. I ordered my pack in Polish woodland which is the official camo pattern of the Polish army, it is very similar to the US Army woodland pattern but the greens are a little darker which is good for the darker boreal forests in Poland. When the pack arrived it came in a nice re-useable shopping bag which I can give to my Mom to use for groceries. The shipping was very fast, I got a shipping confirmation the next business day since I ordered on a weekend. As for the pack itself, I was pleasently surprised at how comfortable the pack was, it sits perfectly on my bag and is not awkward like many tactical packs. One of the problems I have with many of tactical packs is finding ones that are comfortable because of my large athletic build at 6'2" and 250 pounds. When I wear this pack I don't even feel that it is there, which is what you want for a get home bag/bug out bag. Stop weighing yourself down unnecessarily with pounds of crap, simplify and lighten your kit and pick up the Direct Action Dust pack it is more than you will ever need for 90% of uses. Keep yourself light and agile. The Dust also has a decievingly large amount of space for the dimensions listed on the webpage. Don't let the dimensions fool you I was a little concerned it might be too small, but the main compartment is very roomy. I can easily fit 3 days worth of food plus a 64 ounce klean canteen in the main compartment with still room to spare. Plus it has a nice organizer pocket where I can put my grease pencils, fire steel, sharpening tools, maps, compass, wet wipes, flashlights, Ham radio, glow sticks, and radiation dosimeter. I recommend this bag to everyone, it is so refreshing to see a pack at this size that has quality and durability as well as comfort, organization, large choice of colors, and price. You won't regret buying this pack.

Phenomenal Review by RYAN D / (Posted on 6/18/2017)
When I purchased this pack I was looking for a quality EDC bag to and from work as well as being able to use during hikes with the family. I am currently deployed so have been unable to use it out with the family yet, but for EDC in deployed location it has been AMAZING! It fits everything I need for the day. I have one slight minus and that is when I try and cinch the shoulder straps it can be a bit difficult if there is enough weight in the bag. with about ten pounds of weight it is still pretty difficult on one side to cinch. Other than that it is an awesome pack!

So far, so good Review by Armando S / (Posted on 6/8/2017)
The price is steep for a 20-L backpack. Time will tell if it's worth the investment.

I've waited for a year for the Mk-II black Dust. It's an upgrade in quality from my previous pack, but a downgrade in size (down from 27-L), which is what I was looking to achieve. Given the strong materials in this pack, there is hardly any change in the pack's weight. However, I'm able to carry the exact same load (the pack's organization is a credit to its designers) much more comfortably.

The hip belt, while currently unnecessary for the Dust's daily use, fits perfectly on my Rush 24 for its medium loads.

I wasn't sure if I would like the side pocket modification in the Mk-II, but I was amazed they could still securely keep a 40-oz. ThermoFlask.

No disappointments here. If any issues come up in terms of its durability, I'll make sure to post an update.

Outstanding day pack. Review by Cole R / (Posted on 4/20/2017)
The quality is fantastic, very robust. The zippers are smooth and beefy, and the cordura laughs at thorns, branches and whatever else you throw at it. The laser cut webbing is beautiful and functional, very sturdy. The side pockets fits 1 Litre stainless steel bottles easily with extra room for something like a nalgene. As a big guy the bag fits surprisingly well so I wouldn't worry about comfort if you are in great shape. If you are looking for a perfect day hike/overnighter bag this thing will get the job done.

The Direct Action Dust backpack is a great product from a professional company. Review by L D / (Posted on 3/13/2017)
I have been looking for a new day pack to serve as a blind bag for waterfowl hunting. None of the commercial sporting backpacks that are on the market really fit my needs. I want smaller bag with numerous compartments so that I can conveniently compartmentalize the gear that I typically take out for a days hunt. In addition, I want a bag that is truly rugged and well made. I also want to be able to customize it to my personal needs. I found a few backpacks that I like, but none better than the Direct Action Dust pack. I'm really pleased with the size, durability, quality construction, and overall convenience of this backpack.

I'm impressed with the the company, Direct Action. They wrapped and shipped my bag in a very timely, professional manner. Based on my experience, and the backpack that I purchased, I'd definitely recommend the Dust bag from Direct Action. I will certainly be making other purchases from this company.

This is what I was looking for. Review by Alan P / (Posted on 3/4/2017)
This is a well-designed, durable, adaptable day pack. It has plenty of useful pockets/partitions and the webbing allows for attachment of extra pockets etc. The shoulder harness is excellent quality; the hip belt is fairly light, but given its a day pack I shouldn't be carrying any big loads and I've taken it off at the moment. The only thing I would have added is some loops on the base so that you could strap items underneath if need be.
The Dust is fairly expensive when you include the cost of postage to Australia - but you get what you pay for and I'm extremely happy with this day pack.
I highly recommend the Dust.
Cheers,
Tom

I was looking for something for EMT school just enough to put a few books and stuff other small stuff in. I personally don't like big bags and this one was perfect for me. With that being said it is a pretty small bag . I can fit a 2 1/2 in book, a notebook, and a laptop and charger in the main pocket comfortabley not much room. For anything else. One thing is that the buckles do rattle a bit so if you want quite this is probably not for you. Overall it's a great bag. Looks really good in person. Definitely worth the price.

Astounding! Review by Adam H / (Posted on 11/9/2016)
I was hesitant to purchase this pack.
I was on the hunt for a new edc bag that could be used as a day pack. I needed something that was well organized, hydration compatible, but not too big.
The Dust seemed to fit the bill. I had apprehensions because I had never heard of Direct Action and the only thing I knew about Poland was that they have good sausage. I also was hung up on the price tag. There were not many reviews of this pack, so this was a complete gamble for me.
When it came, however, I was astounded! The craftsmanship was obvious as well as the quality materials used. The Combat Vent System is fantastic and the features are everything I could ask for.

Best Features:
Zippers and pulls
Bottle pockets
Strap keepers
Organization
Ranger green color
Comfortable grab handle
Hydration sleeve and laptop sleeve

If you are on the fence about this pack, Go Loud and go for it!

Notes to Direct Action: You have crated a fan that will sing your praises whenever I have the opportunity. Two suggestions for further improvement in case you release a 2.0
-Line the front stash pocket with loop Velcro
-put another mesh pocket where the label is inside the main compartment. Why have a picture of the bag inside the bag? Maybe the label could be printed on the laptop sleeve?

Great quality as aways Review by Steve W / (Posted on 9/21/2016)
My third bag from DA, and it lives up to their reputation. Great organization, solid stitching, zippers glide like they've been oiled, awesome quality all around.

Two things to note about the bag:
1 - It's hard to tell from the pictures, but there is a plastic windowed "map pocket" in the front compartment. According to reviews it's not water resistant, so I'm not really sure why it's there.

2 - The straps don't have as much padding as the Dragon Egg (my favorite bag ever) and it's possible to overload this bag with enough weight to make it uncomfortable to carry slung on one shoulder (carrying ice and water for my kid's soccer game), but its not much of a complaint to say overloading a bag and not carrying it like it was designed to be carried is uncomfortable.

It's a great smaller edc bag for sure, but if you're on the fence about size or strap padding I'd really suggest checking out the Dragon Egg.

Awesome Gear Review by Carl G / (Posted on 8/2/2016)
I'm the kinda guy that is willing to spend my hard earned cash to have the best gear I can possibly obtaine. The price was on the higher end but fair and justified by the high quality materials and the extremely well designed layout. Another great aspect about this company is the availability of different and modern camouflage patterns. Bottom line is if you decide to purchase one of these packs you'll be well pleased. My friends, family, teammates and everyone I meet that is like minded all comment on how much they like my pack and ask where to get one.
Ok ok, I'm not a fan boy or a sales man. Heres the slight negative that I can mention. I was very much so hoping to get a Direct Action patch and or at least a sticker. This obviously isn't a deal breaker or a drawback to the gear.

EDC Review by Paul B / (Posted on 7/30/2016)
Comfortable and light for all day hiking and I don't have worry about it scraping against rock faces. I had a 2L gel water bladder frozen and 3 16.9oz water bottles plus some survival essentials. The ice lasted 5 hours in 105 degree sun. My back was wet from sweat and condensation but, can't beat nice cold water. I refilled the bladder with the other bottles but, I think if I drank them first I might have gotten the ice to last longer. My previous backpacks can't compare.

After being a loyal Tactical Tailor customer for many years, I decided to branch out and check other companies. Im not a big fan of the new webbing since I used it in the sand, shells and sand are hard to get out, but I used the DUST on the GORUCK and it handled perfectly. Size, accessibility, you name it. BURIES the RUSH 12

Small pack with big features Review by Anthony M / (Posted on 6/12/2016)
I was looking for a small backpack for EDC and travel, I had heard good things about Direct Action so I decided to purchase a DUST.
I am impressed by the quality of the bag in general and the attention to detail that was put into the design of the pack, all of the space is actually usable as are all of the various pockets and compartments. Everything is well thought out.
I would strongly recommend this pack to anyone looking for an everyday or travel (carry-on size) backpack

A Woman and Her EDC Review by Donna / (Posted on 5/16/2016)
I'm 56 and have never had a backpack in my life. I saw Survival Lilly's glowing review and the features the bag has and this sold me. I was not prepared for the outstanding quality and workmanship of this bag when I unpacked it. From that moment on, I ditched my handbags and have an EDC I truly love that loves me back by always being able to carry important emergency stuff with me, ready to go. I have back problems and this bag doesn't aggravate it one bit, it's very comfortable. As well as it's made, it will no doubt outlast me! :)

I'm 56 and have never carried a backpack before now. I have ditched my handbags for everyday use and tote this instead. I LOVE this pack! The quality and design are sublime. Plenty of room for everyday gear and comfortable for a problem back. I plan on getting a Foxtrot at a later date. Thanks for making such a high quality product at an affordable price. :)

Found my new EDC backpack Review by Guy T / (Posted on 5/10/2016)
I have a 511 Rush12, SOG Ninja, Vanquest Javelin 3.0, Chrome Mini messenger, Da Kine Element, and this has everything I wanted that the others miss a point or another. I need to support a 11” MacAir or iPad3, Galaxy Tab S 8.4, 40oz Hydroflask, Maxpedition micro, Bose on-ears and a bunch of EDC blades & tools, first aid and gear. Everything fits perfect. The build quality is superb. The H2O bottle holders are brilliant and fit my Hydroflask perfectly with the retention strap used to strap in the cap loop. The only thing that would have made this a grand slam would have been a fleece lined quick access pocket on top by the chameleon logo (like the Dragon Egg) for my Oakleys. The Shadow Gray is a darker gray version of Maxpedition’s Foliage. I have stopped bag-shopping around, this is it!

Perfect size for EDC. Able to carry a 13" MacBook Pro in the laptop area with ease. The sternum strap is removable and the waist strap is tuck able. This would make a great get home bag. The laser cut molly is very nice. The fabric is light, but seems very durable.

Awesome EDC bag. Review by Mario g c / (Posted on 4/15/2016)
I came across the Direct Action Dust on amazon for $139. I was really interested in the bag so I went directly to Direct Actions website and found it for $119. After receiving it I was extremely pleased on the quality and look of the bag. It's tough, well made, and can accommodate any one who's into edc gear. My next bag is going to be the dragon egg for hiking and camping trips.

Overall a good product Review by Miguel T / (Posted on 4/14/2016)
When I open my package two things I notice right away; quality and the size. The backpack is great quality and I can tell it is made to last. The backpack did turn out smaller than what the pictures made it look like. I was surprise I was able to fit in everything I wanted to go into it, I just did not expect to look so small. Couple of my men made comments its size but we're impress by how much it could hold. Overall a good product, thinking about purchasing more products from them.

Great quality bag, highly recommend. Review by Abdalrhman M / (Posted on 4/5/2016)
The bag appears small at first, but can hold way more than you'd expect. I personally use it to carry around several books, a laptop and other school items and it seems to do the job perfectly. It is lightweight, yet durable and is made from high quality fabric and materials. It is great at distributing heavy weight through the shoulder straps and padding along the back. I have only been using it for a couple of weeks now, but I am confident that I will be using it for at least 10 years or more- unless I decide to upgrade to a larger DA bag before then. Highly recommend to all.

Great ever day backpack Review by Jason / (Posted on 4/2/2016)
This backpack is roughly equivalent in size to a larger standard school backpack. But, it is exceptionally well thought out, organized, and built. It's construction is so solid you could carry lead bricks in it and it would handle the weight. It is a great single-day pack you could use for a day hike, a day in the park, or keeping your essential 'go' items in for short-term emergency situations. But, it isn't large enough to function as a true go-bag UNLESS you aren't planning on packing a change of clothes. Honestly, for a kid, this would be a perfect first camping pack that would last essentially their entire life.

Make a great pack even greater! Review by Thomas W / (Posted on 3/11/2016)
This pack is well built and durable. It replaced my Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon II. I would like to see a rubber or PVC covering on the bottom so if it sits on a damp/wet area it will stay dry. I'd also like to see the bottle holder pockets on the exterior sides to be moved back (or forward) a couple of inches and allow the main compartment to open up full clam shell just like the front pocket does. Additionally, if the grab handle was heavy webbing with a neoprene cover AND THEN cover that with the paracord then it would be even better IMHO. I know these are "nit picking" little preferences, but small changes that COULD make the pack greater. I like the 500 D cordura instead of the 1000 D. That does make it lighter but yet still real durable. I love the fact that the bottle holders can zip up to make slip pockets and the front pocket is perfect for admin organization. Finally, the laser etched molle/PALS is 100% better than stitched webbing. It looks neater and cleaner and not so tactical looking. I am a paraplegic and this pack fits nicely on the back of my wheelchair to carry all my EDC and necessities I must have with me. It's not too small and I'm afraid if it were too much bigger then I would over pack it and make the wheelchair flip backwards...LOL. I would (and have) recommend this bag to anyone needing a basic, small EDC pack to get out and go. A very well stitched and put together product that will last a long time and handed down to future generations. Great work DAG!

Unfortunately when I received this bag I realized it was smaller than what I anticipated so I contacted direct action and spoke with Allan, who was extremely helpful in assisting me with returning the dust bag for the ghost bag. A few days later I received the ghost bag and it maintained the same high quality structure, excellent design and met the size requirements that I needed. Direct Action Dust Review by Hugh S / (Posted on 2/24/2016)
This really is a top quality piece of kit. What impresses me the most is the quality of the zips and the overall configuration of the pack. This has become my grab and go pack for both urban and short trips into the bush. Another big bonus for me was the quickness of receiving the backpack, I'm in New Zealand and it arrived before some other items I'd ordered locally and from Oz. Really 10 out of 10 for the quality and the service. Hugh.

Superb Product Review by Gary V / (Posted on 2/23/2016)
I am a very conspicuous and detailed consumer and I am willing to spend a bit more $ for a quality product. The Direct Action DUST backpack has exceeded my expectations and ironically, is very reasonably priced for what you get. This pack meets all of my EDC needs and I find myself grabbing and actually using it. Design wise, I really have no complaints; it is well thought out and efficient. The materials and workmanship are outstanding. Once you have it in hand, you will know that you have a quality piece of gear. Just yesterday, one of my coworkers complimented the pack. I purchased the gray color and it really looks great in person; well suited for both the urban and rural environment. Well worth your hard earned money. Thank you Direct Action!

This bag is great. The shoulder straps look a little thin, but they feel good. The inside is well laid out, nice padding. I like the front that opens flat. I have a Maxpedition Sitka slink, was going to get the Maxpedition Duality which was out of stock everywhere. I found this, and I'm glad I did as its bigger than the Duality/Sitka, but not huge. iPad MBP 13, extra keyboard, cables, plus more room.

Excellent small pack for ruck plate Review by Thomas P / (Posted on 1/28/2016)
I wanted a small pack that'd fit a "long" 30 LB goruck plate (9.5"x15") in its laptop/hydration sleeve. The ruck plate fits very tightly in the back sleeve of the Dust, so I'm relieved that I didn't have to return this pack to get a larger one. Now I've got plenty of room in the main compartment for bricks, and will work up to 40% BW.

The back padding on the Dust is perfect for rucking, better than any non-tactical packs I was using, including Camelbak NV.

The Dust straps can handle the weight, but don't have much padding and start to hurt after 6 miles when carrying over 30 pounds. Obviously the Dust wasn't intended for a heavy load, so I was wondering if a Dragon Egg would have worked better for rucking, but I wanted a smaller pack with less molle.

I like the less conspicuous laser-cut versus molle straps, and would have preferred something more "covert" like the GoRuck or 5.11 Covrt packs, but the Dust provides better value and design, IMO.

Great pack, great value. Review by Jason B / (Posted on 1/27/2016)
I can't help but love this back. When I purchased it, I worried it might be a little small (usually I go for slightly bigger packs) but it's perfect for EDC or even a weekend getaway on a checked-in bag only fare. I just took it to South East Asia and loved it even more. The ribbed foam supports in the back help air circulate better than any pack I've had (and packs that I have spent significantly more for) and it's nice to walk around the tropics without that typical wet back feeling.

Great pack, great value. Perfect EDC. A lot of my colleagues and friends will be ordering one soon. Nice work, Direct Action.

Very good small pack. Great for day hikes. Review by Ramon Verdaguer / (Posted on 1/9/2016)
I've only had the pack for few weeks so this is preliminary review. Excellent quality. The stitching and overall fit and finish are second to none. Very comfortable for loads of 10 lb or so. Would change a couple of things though. Would incorporate a high visibility liner option inside. Because the pack does not clamshell open, it is quite dark and sometimes it is difficult to see the contents inside. A little bit of webbing at the bottom to be able to attach a tarp or small bedroll would make this pack more versatile. The second biggest compartment clamshells open and offers great organization. I would, however change the clear plastic pocket into a mesh pocket. It is very narrow, so it works ok for a map, but I typically have the map on my person as putting in and taking it out of the compartment gets tedious. So it pretty much goes unused. The zippers are fantastic, running very smoothly. I absolutely love the side pockets. They hold my 32 oz Nalgene bottle and nesting cup with plenty of room. The back padding is great for comfort and gives the pack structure. When properly packed it can stand upright on its own, which I really appreciate. So overall so far it looks like a very good pack. Let's see how it holds up to wear and tear over time. I highly recommend it.

The "Silent Professional" among hordes of Gucci-Gear tacticool bags. Review by Ryan H / (Posted on 12/15/2015)
I'll preface this by saying I'm a first-time customer, and I heard about your company in a roundabout way on the internet. I'll admit a conflict of interest: I'm typically a hardcore fan of Mystery Ranch and Kifaru, as I'm quite experienced with their gear. That's changed. I've been overwhelmingly impressed not just with the product I received, but with the company as a whole.

The bag shipped extremely quickly, and when I SNAFU'd my initial order, your staff was extremely courteous, efficient, and outstanding in their delivery of customer service.

The bag is incredibly well made. Excellent choice of materials, sturdy zippers, bombproof buckles, and it zips nearly silently. The laser cut MOLLE panels on the front and across each expandable side pocket are tasteful and effective: no excess webbing for the "tacticool" crowd. Sleek, and low-profile: doesn't get snagged in foliage at all. The bag struck a balance between a small form factor and judicious use of pockets and compartmentalization. The clear vinyl pocket is perfect for maps, documents, and other miscellany. Exterior velcro is perfect: not a posterboard for morale patches. Expandable side pockets are perfect for a 32oz Nagalene, beer, or tools.

As a paramedic and military trained medic, I like to think I have a keen eye for how the layout of a bag is best utilized. From what my feeble mind can gather, you've utilized all available space in such a manner to make it organized, yet leaving enough room for the user to adapt.

The combat vent system is adequate and my only true gripe is a lack of padding on the straps. A touch more could improve the feel of the bag without losing it's signature sleekness. Otherwise, it conforms to the back very well, and is largely low profile. It's fit through more than one crevasse, and takes thick brush like a champ.

I'm actively using this bag as an EDC and 24 hour daypack. It serves the purpose wonderfully, and I'm actively trying to figure out how to work out of it longer. It withstands 24 hour shifts, hikes and climbs, and military exercises. Overall, I'm extremely impressed. From the quality, versatility, and overall "bang-for-your-buck", I was pleasantly surprised with what I've seen thus far.

Keep up the good work, never stop improving.

Thanks,

Ryan

BEST BAG EVER!!! Review by Fernando A / (Posted on 12/4/2015)
I love this bag, great on my plate carrier, great spacing on the shoulder straps for hose lines or peltor push talks, plenty em for the dismounted forward observer, only bad part there is no antenna port on the side of the bag for my so I had to cut a hole then reinforce it, so it wouldn't tear further but that is just personnel preference and not a flaw, it has hole on top of the bag through the middle which works great for comms wires and hose lines but not so great for the antenna other then that great buy and great on my back

Excellent Pack Review by Anthony P / (Posted on 11/11/2015)
In the spirit of fairness, I'll start with saying I recently sold my dust as I needed a different style bag.
That said, the design, quailty and build of the Dust for the money cannot be beat.
Only thing I'd say to do different in the future. Move the zipper on the map pocket to the top so the pocket does not have to open all the way. Maybe add another mesh pocket on the inside of the main section.
If I need another bag, DA will get my business.

Best pack in this category hands down! Review by Anthony C / (Posted on 11/7/2015)
I am using this pack mainly as an E.D.C pack. The features of this pack are very conducive to organization and convenience. The zippered water bottle pockets are outstanding. They hide away when not in use and are big enough for a Nalgene bottle. The admin. Pocket fillets open to access any of your gear very easily. The main compartment only zips down have the length of the bag, but this is a trade off for the water bottle pockets. The quality and stitching are as perfect as I've seen on a bag. All hardware is top notch as well. If I had to nit pick the pack, I would suggest that the front stash pocket zipper be moved to the other side. As a right handed person, it would be easier to access when the bag is slung to the front of the body. Also, the quick release buckles on the shoulder straps rattle when you walk with the bag. I guess the tolerances are off just a bit. It's not a huge deal breaker, but it can get annoying. All in all, this is the best pack in this size/price range hands down. Keep up the good work and keep churning out fantastic products. I look forward to some organizer pouches in the future from you.

Fantastic Review by Christopher P / (Posted on 11/7/2015)
I had been looking for a pack for a few weeks and wanted something to fit my 5'7" frame without being too bulky. I read about the Dust bag and decided to try it out. My first impression was instantly high when I opened the box and saw the care put into shipping and the cool dust cover in the box.
The day after I received the bag I took it on a charity 20 mile ruck loaded with clothes and snacks. It worked great.
I use it daily and my 15" MacBook Pro fits perfectly snug in it. My cousin actually ordered one yesterday for college as he really liked the compact size and wants something for a few textbooks and his Conceal Carry.

Perfect backpack in the 20 liters range Review by Gil / (Posted on 10/13/2015)
Top notch materials (Cordura, Sturdy zips...) and fit and finish (high end stitching...). Comfortable. Nice waist belt (removable, or you can add a bigger one with the passage at the bottom). Good organization panel, might be even better with hook and loop to customize the administration pocket. 20 liters and even more with the side pockets (incredibly useful to store water bottle and stuff) and the compression straps (to tie a jacket). The side pockets are the same on the GHOST, and that's a good point, they are smaller and less usefull on the DRAGON EGG. The compartment for a water bladder can be used to store a raincover. The vent system absorbs shocks and is just amazing, it really works and will keep your back pretty dry. Perfect weight, around 1kg. Price seems high for a small backpack, but the quality is in the top tier like Arc'teryx or Mystery Ranch (cost x2 to x4). Deserves a lifetime warranty, because you'll buy it once and it will last.

The DUST is my favorite backpack. Great for a day or two. Urban environment, hicking, whatever, it will do the job. Love it in Kryptek.

For a bigger volume, the DRAGON EGG is cool but in my opinion the GHOST is a better option: more storabe, greater comfort, larger side pockets and a better shape along the body. DRAGON EGG, pretty good. DUST and GHOST, amazing. Some of the best backpacks in the market, best quality and comfort at an affordable price.

Awesome Bag Review by Greg Ancheta / (Posted on 10/1/2015)
I was looking for an every day pack that was just the right size to carry all the essentials without weighing me down. This bag does the job exceptionally good! The organization panel is on point, and the main pocket is plenty roomy. But what really sets this bag from others that I own, 5.11 and Maxpedition packs, is the comfort and light weight. I would definitely recommend this pack .

Sturdiest Daypack I've Found Review by Donald S / (Posted on 8/27/2015)
I will probably have this daypack for decades, it is so sturdy. It offers generous compartments, with good space at the bottom of the main one suitable for larger heavy items, 2 huge adjustable water bottle holders, lots of loops and places to attach carabiners for extra equipment, and comfortable, adjustable shoulder, chest, and waist straps. I use it for my day hikes, on which I listen to audio textbooks, so I have the extra battery packs, a Bluetooth speaker, 2-20 oz water bottles, fleece jacket, rain jacket, first aid kit, multiple snacks, my iPad, extra glasses and sunglasses, bug spray, sunblock, and basically the pack still has tons of space. The weight is carried very comfortably since the back is wider at the bottom so it feels good on my back. I've had it only a few weeks but the zippers and construction are the sturdiest I've ever seen in a pack. Very glad I have this to help me enjoy my daily hikes. I bought separately a bright red rain cover for rain and for hunting season, since the pack is water-resistant but not waterproof.

Large Messenger Bag Review by Dorian D / (Posted on 8/26/2015)
The only things that could make this a better bag are better concealed carry options (velcro panels in the back pocket) high contrast interior, put one of the same zip close expandable water bottle pockets like your back pack, and a larger size. Overall very happy. Excellent quality and stitching.

Small but Great Review by Jesse J / (Posted on 8/21/2015)
You really need to think about the size of this pack before you buy it. I'm 6'4'' 230 lbs and I look like I stole a little kids back pack when i wear it. That being said, that is the only negative thing I have to say about this pack. I downsized my EDC/Go-Bag from a SOC 3 day pack to this and still have room for all the random oddities that I need to carry throughout the day. I've used it on trips and even converted it to a makeshift tool bag for a weekend. The bag is very well built. I tend to be pretty rough on my gear and it shows no signs of quitting. Highly recommended.

All around excellent bag Review by Jason D / (Posted on 7/9/2015)
I bought this bag to take camping ... I was looking for something small but organized for all of the things I take when camping with boy scouts. This bag worked great ... sturdy ... well made ... with specifically designed locations in the bag for everything I carry - from a map to a first aid kit and flashlight. Additionally the shipping was great - despite waiting too long to order the bag - DA got it in the mail in time and I received it the day we left for summer camp. Nice job Direct Action - next time I'm in the market for a similar bag - you guys will be my first stop.

thanks,
Jason

The end of a year long quest Review by Benjamin H / (Posted on 7/1/2015)
I've used a 5.11 RUSH MOAB sling bag for about 3 years now, from the outdoors to every day use. It was great, but the single strap got a bit tiring. Begin the hunt for a new pack, and boy did I have a lot of requirements. Not too big, not too small, lightweight, molle webbing, etc... After months and many returned packs I stumbled upon Direct action, which I'd never heard of before, so I thought I'd give it a whirl. This pack hit every point I was looking for, and then some. the zippers are perfect, the webbing is sturdy but still low profile, pack is the exact size for a day trip or 3 day hike. It even had things I wasn't epecting, like the collapsable side pouches, a solid channel for your spine in the padding (I forget it's on my back). I couldn't rant enough about perfect this pack is, and if I ever need anything larger I'll be sure to get the next one from Direct Action.
P.S. arrived 3 days earlier than expected too.

May be the perfect EDC pack Review by Stephen / (Posted on 4/15/2015)
I own all three of the DA backpacks (yes, I have a problem) and I think this one is my favorite overall. It's as close as I've found to being the perfect EDC pack for my use. It is nice and low profile but still holds all my gear comfortably. I love the fact that the side pockets will accommodate a Nalgene and flatten completely out of the way when not in use. The paracord handle is another awesome touch. The construction and material quality are as good as I've seen and what I've come to expect from these guys. Bravo!

Great product, but shipping was a disappointment; it took 10 days to get it when I could have had it in 3 days with flat rate USPS shipping. Review by Charles S / (Posted on 4/14/2015)
The construction of this pack seems good.
I have not had a chance to evaluate the comfort level of it being fully loaded, but it is a smaller pack that I plan on carrying minimal gear in. That being said, the attention to detail in sewing and the general layout of organization seems great.
I would not hesitate to buy Direct Action products after seeing the quality of this product.

Sweet Bag ! Review by Eric K. / (Posted on 2/11/2015)
This backpack was a great choice so far. I was looking for a smaller every day carry backpack to use to and from work. I walk to work most days so carrying things in my arms is really an inconvenience. I am a larger person so some backpacks are very uncomfortable. This pack is very comfortable and for a smaller backpack the waist strap fits around my body. I would recommend this pack to anybody. Great Job !!!
